Requirements for Membership, Ordination, and Credentialing

All of our members are ordained chaplains and have legal recognition outside the church as members of the Clergy. Requirements for ordination as described below. Credentialing beyond "Basic Ordained Chaplain" has additional requirements, education, and expectations as described. 


We use and recommend ICPT.EDU for obtaining Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). In fact, we are a clinical training site for them and hours you serve in Chaplain ministry with us will meet your clinical hours requirement. 


We use and recommend The Association of Certified Christian Chaplains (ACCC) for obtaining nationally recognized certification as professional Chaplain. 

Basic Ordained Chaplain Member

Must be a member in good standing of an Evangelical Christian Church.


Must be recommended by your pastor.


Must be recommended by a personal reference who has known you at least 3 years.


Must submit to a background check.

 

Must agree completely with our Statement of Faith.

 

Must agree with our Vision and Mission.

 

Must complete our training, “The Basics of Chaplaincy.”

 

Must pass an interview with our Senior Pastor and Executive Director.

 

Must sign and adhere to our Code of Conduct and Ethics.

 

Must have a high school diploma or higher.

 

Must obtain 20 hours of continuing education annually.

 

Every three years you must:


a. Submit to a new background check.


b. Verify continued membership in an Evangelical Christian Church.

  

c. Verify adherence to our Code of Conduct and Ethics.


d.  Verify you have met the continuing education requirements.


Violation of the Code of Conduct can result in disciplinary action including termination of your credential. 

Credentialed Ordained Chaplain Requirements

For licensed credentialed Chaplains we have all of the previous requirements plus the following:


CERTIFIED CHAPLAIN ASSISTANT (CAC)

Must have a minimum of a high school education and some college.

Must complete 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Must complete 20 hours of continuing education annually.

 

BOARD CERTIFIED ASSOCIATE CHAPLAIN (BCAC)

Bachelor’s degree.

Must complete 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Must complete 40 hours of continuing education annually.

 

BOARD ENDORSED CLINICAL CHAPLAIN (BECC)

Master’s degree (or higher) in divinity, theology, or equivalent.

Must complete 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Must receive the BECC credential.

Must complete 50 hours of continuing education annually.

 

BOARD CERTIFIED CHAPLAIN (BCC)

Master’s degree (or higher) in divinity or equivalent.

Must complete 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Must receive the BCC credential.

Must have a minimum 3 years ministerial experience.

Must complete 50 hours of continuing education annually.

We will maintain standards for endorsement as required by VA Hospitals.

 

CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION SUPERVISOR (CPES)

Master’s degree (or higher) in divinity, theology, or equivalent.

Must have completed 4 units of CPE

Must be either BECC or BCC

Must complete Supervisor in Training (SIT) with ICPT.EDU

Must be approved as a Supervisor with ICPT.EDU
